Food Action Plan

Seattle has made a healthy, local, sustainable food system a priority. Supporting our local food system improves health, promotes equity, and strengthens our economy. To support our food system in Seattle and the region, the City has created the Seattle Food Action Plan.

Food

Healthy, affordable food is vital to an equitable and sustainable community. Many activities go on to feed a community - growing, harvesting, processing, packaging, transporting, distributing, buying and selling, cooking, eating, disposing of waste.

The City of Seattle has long fostered programs to achieve this goal, such as the P-Patch program, farmer's markets, senior meals, and food waste recycling. Almost every department at the City has been engaged and working together to accomplish many things and do even more as we move forward.

More recently, the Mayor and the City Council have supported several policy efforts to improve the food system, including the passage of a resolution to establish the Local Food Action Initiative in 2008, declaring 2010 the Year of Urban Agriculture, and passing a resolution for the Seattle Farm Bill Principles.

This website pulls together information about existing City services and programs, community resources, and partnerships related to the many aspects of food.
