SMOOTH SCALING: HOW TO KEEP YOUR STARTUP AFLOAT

SEATTLE RANKS HIGH AMONG LEADING LOCATIONS FOR ECONOMIC, JOB GROWTH

AREA DEVELOPMENT

The Seattle/Bellevue/Everett area is ranked 25 out of 379 metropolitan statistical areas that Area Development has analyzed from economic and workforce data in order to identify and understand which cities across America are emerging as front-runners in this new era of economic development possibilities. Many factors can move a city's attractiveness as a business site into the foreground, and chief among those drivers for 2014 are economic benefits from domestic manufacturing, oil and gas fields, and the spread of high-technology to urban epicenters.

THE BATTLE FOR SEATTLE: ALASKA VS. DELTA

SEATTLE BUSINESS MAGAZINE

When the Seattle Seahawks returned to Sea-Tac Airport after winning the Super Bowl, a Delta Airlines flight attendant waved a blue 12th Man flag from the cockpit window as the plane taxied to the terminal. For the Atlanta-based airline, it was yet another claim on the home turf of Alaska Airlines. It was also a reminder that Delta's master plan to become "the region's global carrier" is picking up steam. Alaska has been undergoing its own ramp-up, adding flights as well, and is even investing $40 million in a major remodel at Sea-Tac. BOARD GAMES ARE BACK, AND SEATTLE'S TECHIES ARE FUELING THE MOVEMENT

MY NORTHWEST

Many of the new board games are made by people in the tech field, and they are often being played by people in the tech field. Seattle's Dan Shapiro, who has worked for Google and Microsoft, recently invented a kid's board game called Robot Turtles, a board game that teaches young kids the basics of programming, while the parent acts as the computer. Robot Turtles is the most-backed board game in Kickstarter history. "I set out to raise $25,000. As it happened, we hit $25,000 in the first five hours. Then, $100,000 in the first two days and wound up with more than 13,000 people from 65 different counties, buying 36 tons of Robot Turtles and raising just over $630,000 in total."

FUNG BROTHERS' VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS CHINATOWN/ID

FUNG BROTHERS

In honor of a recent spring cleaning in the Chinatown/International District where nearly 600 volunteers took to the streets and helped paint, pressure wash, landscape, and lay gravel in the neighborhood, Seattle natives the Fung Brothers created a music video that highlights the fun, favorite local spots and people of the neighborhood. Gallons of paint, hours of footage, hundreds of bahn mi sandwiches, and one impromptu parade helped make the day memorable and can now be seen in this music video tribute.
