Refrigeration Permit

See also:

What Is It?

You need a refrigeration permit whenever a refrigeration system is assembled on site. The contractor installing the system must have a valid City of Seattle refrigeration mechanic's license. The license must be appropriate for the refrigerant used in the system. You may also need to meet other requirements, including:

  • Getting a separate mechanical permit
  • Complying with the Seattle noise ordinance, if you are installing components outside of your building
  • Getting a refrigeration operating permit, under certain circumstances, if the system is over 50 horsepower
  • Getting a business license if you are working in Seattle, even if your office is outside the city

How Much Does It Cost?

Our base permit fee for installing refrigeration is $57, plus an additional amount for each compressor. Our fee for refrigeration repair or alteration is based on the value of the work.

How Long Does It Take?

We issue most refrigeration permits over the counter, on the same day that you apply. You don't need an appointment and up to two permits can be taken in at a time. We may be able to take in more permits depending on how busy the Applicant Services Center is. Wait time is generally less than 20 minutes. You can also mail or fax in your application; we give walk-ins priority, however.
