Designing Public Spaces that Enhance Quality of Life
April 1, 2008

Speaker: Lars Gemzoe, Senior Consultant and Associate Partner, Gehl Architects of Denmark

Attend this professional design studio on the Gehl Methodology led by Lars Gemzoe of Gehl Architects, an internationally recognized expert in assisting cities move toward less emphasis on the car and more bicycling, walking, and inviting public spaces. Mr. Gemzoe will be conducting a two-part, all day studio for professional architects, planners and others in the Gehl methodology. The methodology is founded on the principle that cities can improve the quality of life if the planning process reflects citizen’s priorities – resulting in a public realm that is lively, active and sustainable. The morning session will cover theory. During a two-hour lunch break, participants will choose a downtown site to evaluate using Gehl concepts. In the afternoon, everyone will come back together to share their ideas with Mr. Gemzoe and each other. Participants can attend either the morning session, or the morning and afternoon sessions.

Sponsored by the International Sustainability Institute, and co-Sponsored by City of Seattle and Scan Design Foundation.

Lars’ publications include: Public Spaces - Public Life - Copenhagen 1996 awarded the Edra/PLACES Research Award in 1998, New City Spaces, 2001 published in Danish, English, Czech, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese editions and New City Life, 2006 published in Danish and English.
