DCLU Proposal to Amend the Land Use Code to Allow Sign Kiosks

May 3, 2001

The Department of Design, Construction and Land Use(DCLU) is proposing to amend the Land Use Code to allow sign kiosks. The purpose of the kiosks is to allow communities the opportunity to communicate information of interest within the community. The amendment, sponsored by Councilmembers Licata and Conlin, responds to the recommendations of the Community Kiosk Task Force to allow neighborhoods a means of providing information about events of interest to the neighborhood. Twenty-eight out of thirty-seven neighborhood plans specified an interest in providing kiosks in their neighborhoods, and many communities have made requests to the Department of Neighborhoods to site kiosks.

There will be a joint committee hearing (Culture, Arts and Parks, Neighborhoods, and Sustainability and Community Development) on May 8, and a Council public hearing on May 15, with a Council vote scheduled for May 29. For further information about these hearings, contact Phyllis Shulman of Councilmember Conlin's office at 684-8805. For information about the ordinance, contact Kristian Kofoed, DCLU, at 233-7191.
