Refrigeration Exam to Change October 1, 2000
The Licensing Department of DCLU has been working to revise all its written refrigeration exams. The new exams will be administered starting October 1st 2000.

Currently, the Licensing Department administers the following written exams:

  • Journeyman Mechanic - Freon
  • Journeyman Mechanic – Ammonia
  • Operating Engineer – Freon
  • Operating Engineer – Ammonia

Journeyman Mechanic or Operating Engineer candidates wishing to be licensed in both gasses must take the Freon and the Ammonia test.

The subject matter of the revised exams will be the same, but the scope has been broadened to cover more operational and safety issues.

Schools, instructors, or anybody involved in teaching this material is encouraged to contact DCLU to discuss the new written exam format, in order to be better prepared to serve their students.

   Summary of Changes

The sketches used for the new exam have not been revised, and they are essentially the same as those used previously.
  • The format has been changed from the essay type to a multiple-choice type.
  • Questions will be selected at random from a database of questions.
  • Questions have been added to cover alternatives to Chlorofluorocarbon gasses.
  • Questions have been added to cover more safety and operational aspects.
  • The number of questions on the test has been brought from 50 to about 75. The intention is to test candidates on a wider variety of issues.

At this time there are no plans to change the oral exam (an oral exam is required for the journeyman license), however, this option is still being evaluated.
