University District Revitalization
Background

The Mayor's goals and strategy for the University District Revitalization are:

  • Make the University District safe and secure - with increased police presence, tougher noise restrictions and "Giving Meters" to help fund programs for homeless youth
  • Rebuild the University District - with a dynamic mix of shops, restaurants, workspaces, housing, and pedestrian-friendly spaces by increasing transit service, strengthening infrastructure, making facade improvements and adding amenities such as trees, benches and public art
  • Work together - with the UW and developers to attract a diverse base of businesses and customers
  • Invest for the long term - with housing incentives, targeted technical assistance and loans for small business development, a $1 million Pro-Parks Levy and by lifting the UW Lease Lid

This strategy is the result of the City-sponsored Economic Development Study, 2000 Census data, an open space survey sent to tenants, and an open space study (electronic version coming soon).
