Stormwater, Grading and Drainage Code Revisions
Overview

Revised Stormwater & Grading Code
Take Effect Nov. 30

On September 30, the Mayor signed into law three new ordinances relating to stormwater and grading. Among other changes, the revised Stormwater Code requires use of green stormwater infrastructure. Changes are effective on Nov. 30, achieving equivalency with the Department of Ecology's 2005 Stormwater Management Manual for Western Washington.

DPD and Seattle Public Utilities are in the process of updating the joint Director’s Rules that make up the Stormwater Manual.  Links to the adopted ordinances and proposed rules are on the New Code & Rules page.

For more information about the stormwater code, please contact the DPD Drainage Desk at (206) 684-5362.

The Stormwater, Grading and Drainage Control Code (SMC 22.800-22.808) and associated Directors’ Rules are being revised to account for advances in urban stormwater runoff management practices. These regulations are in place to protect life, property, public health and the environment from the adverse impacts of urban stormwater runoff. Adverse impacts can include flooding, pollution, landslides and erosion.

Changes and updates to the code are being made to make it equivalent to the 2005 Washington Department of Ecology’s Stormwater Management Manual for Western Washington. This is a requirement for compliance with the Municipal Stormwater NPDES Permit, which was issued January 17, 2007.
