Annual Amendments
State law generally limits the City to amending the Comprehensive Plan only once each year. So, the City usually bundles several amendments for review and adoption simultaneously. The amendment process takes almost a full year and follows several steps:
- Mid-May each year is the cutoff for City Council to receive suggested amendments from City staff or the public. The cutoff for 2011 amendments was May 16, 2011.
- Council holds a public hearing and then adopts a resolution in July identifying which of the suggested amendments should have further review.
- Staff in DPD analyzes the suggested amendments from the resolution, and in November submits to City Council an ordinance containing the Mayor’s recommended amendments.
- Council holds a public hearing on that ordinance and adopts a final amendment ordinance in March.
