NEW! Eco-Charrette Report for Neighborhood Fire Station Projects

Click to download
the Fire Stations EcoCharrette Report.

Seattle neighborhood fire stations serve a critical role in localized emergency response, binding neighborhoods together and reflecting the local culture. With the Mayor’s environmental priorities and Seattle’s commitment to LEED certification, green building is an important criterion for the fire station projects. This report summarizes the results of a collaboration throughout 2006 between City Green Building and Seattle’s Fleets and Facilities Department (FFD) that focused on sustainable design for the neighborhood fire station program.

Additionally, click to download these technical briefs specifically relevant to Fire Station project design in Seattle (hyperlink visible when brief is published & available).

  • Rainwater and Greywater Harvesting for Beneficial Reuse
  • Create Safe and Healthy Environments
  • Optimizing Energy Performance
  • Integrated Lighting for Fire Stations: Daylighting and Electric Lighting Strategies
  • Natural Ventilation and Cooling: Passive and Hybrid Systems for Fire Stations
  • Manage All Stormwater with Rainwise Strategies
  • Utilize Hybrid HVAC | Natural Conditioning Scheme
  • Illuminate with Natural Daylight and Integrate with Electric Lighting

A set of guiding principles, design integration strategies, and implementation ideas were created through this effort. Key concepts emerged that support the operational goals of the fire stations, improve building performance, and reduce operational costs benefiting the City and our citizens. While the report serves as a guide for FFD and the design teams, ultimately it is up to each design team to determine the best approach for achieving LEED certification for their circumstances. Eventually, these projects will provide a basis for measuring performance of the neighborhood fire stations portfolio wide, to demonstrate the cost/benefits of green building and to highlight specific strategies to the community that support the Mayor’s environmental priorities.

Building Research Reports

  • LEED-Certified Buildings in Seattle: Analysis and Projections - January 2006
  • LEED Performance & Evaluation Plan: Seattle Justice Center & City Hall - December 2003.  Results of post-occupancy evaluation will be posted on this site when they become available.
  • LEED Cost/Benefit Analysis of McCaw Performance Hall and Seattle Justice Center - April 2003.  Analysis of anticipated cost/benefit of two City facilities slated for LEED Silver certification. While preliminary in nature, the conclusion was that LEED is a good investment, particulary in owner-occupied office-type environments.  For a one-page overview of the report, read the Summary.
