Commercial projects in Seattle are screened during plan or permit review for potential noise issues--particularly projects that are located on the edge of a commercial zone that abuts a residential zone, where noise concerns are more likely to occur.
Mitigation Measures
Mitigation measures for major noise generators are required to ensure that the project meets Noise Ordinance requirements. The DPD Noise Abatement Program lends sound level meters to Seattle citizens at no cost.
For a definition of major noise generators, see CAM 118, Making Sure Your Commercial Project Meets Seattle's Noise Ordinance Requirements.
Acoustical Reports Required for Major Noise Generators
An acoustical consulting report from an acoustical engineering firm is required when a major noise generator is proposed or an existing major noise generator is proposed to be expanded. Whether or not an acoustical consultant report will be required for your project can be determined by first creating a basic acoustical report.
For additional information on preparing an acoustical consulting report, please refer to CAM 415, Applicant Responsibilities and Plan Requirements for Mechanical Permits.
If you have any questions, please contact DPD's Noise Abatement Coordinators.
