The following information will assist you in preparing for your Gas Piping Mechanic license.
Applying for a License
To apply for a license, you must first submit an application and affidavit (see instructions):
The affidavit must be signed by your employer/s. The purpose of the affidavit is to prove your experience as required by the ordinance. Applicants must show proof of one of the following:

At least 6 months of full-time experience as:

A gas piping mechanic;

An unlicensed worker under the supervision of a gas piping mechanic; or

A combination of the two above; or
-
A certificate of completion for a Board approved gas piping mechanic class; or

A valid plumber’s license

The Exam
Our goal is to ensure that installations, alterations, extensions or repairs of gas piping are done in a safe manner in the City of Seattle. The exam will be based on the most current edition of the International Fuel Gas Code with City of Seattle amendments. The exam is an open book test in the multiple choice format. You will be tested for general “practical” knowledge, code knowledge and licensing knowledge. You will need a score of at least 70% to pass the examination. You will need to supply your own copy of the International Fuel Gas Code with Seattle amendments and can be purchased thorough the Public Resource Center on the 20th floor of the Seattle Municipal Building located at 700 – 5th Ave.
Fees
The exam fee is currently $33.00; this fee is in addition to the annual license fee of $74.00 for the Gas Piping Mechanic’s license. Note: New customers have a 90 day grace period to purchase your license. If within 90 days from the date you passed your exam, you do not purchase your license, we require that you retest and you will be charged an exam fee of $33.00.
