Each year DPD housing and zoning inspectors respond to over 4,600 complaints pertaining to minimum housing standards, land use violations, shorelines, tenant relocation assistance, just cause eviction, and vacant and unfit buildings.
Examples of violations include illegal uses, junk storage, vegetation overgrowth into the right of way, vacant buildings and construction noise. DPD's Enforcement Facilitation group provides legal support for obtaining code compliance.
Codes enforced by DPD include land use, construction, environmental protection, housing and building maintenance, just cause eviction, tenant relocation due to development activity, vacant buildings standards, vegetation overgrowth, and noise from construction and equipment.
In addition to the codes listed above, DPD also enforces regulations for construction, signs, environmental protection, and noise from construction and equipment.
DPD's housing and zoning inspectors investigate reports of potential violations to determine if code or permit violations exist. The department's first priorities for investigation and resolution of reported violations are health and safety. Learn more about how DPD reponds to complaints.
