Customer Alert:
*After the final inspection, DPD will grant approval to occupy, or, in the case of projects other than single family homes and duplexes, a Certificate of Occupancy will be issued. The City of Seattle does not issue a Certificate of Occupancy for one and two unit residences.

Each year DPD approves over 23,000 land use and construction-related permits and performs 80,000 on-site inspections. Our team of over 50 construction inspectors visits all construction sites within the city to ensure compliance with building, energy, mechanical, environmental, drainage, erosion control, side sewer, electrical, elevator, boiler, refrigeration, sign and housing/zoning standards.  We also issue licenses for tradespeople in Seattle who operate boilers, conduct gas piping installations, and operate and install refrigeration/air conditioning equipment.

Construction-Related Inspections
To request an inspection or check inspection status of a permitted construction or renovation project or over-the-counter permit, see sidebar.

Code Compliance
Each year DPD's Code Compliance staff, including housing and zoning inspectors, respond to over 4,600 complaints pertaining to minimum housing standards, land use violations, shorelines, tenant relocation assistance, just cause eviction, and vacant and unfit buildings. Examples of violations include illegal uses, junk storage, noxious weed growth, vacant buildings and construction noise. See the Clean Up Your Act site for more information about proposed code changes to strengthen enforcement tools.

Complaints regarding potential violations to Seattle's codes can be filed on our Code Compliance website.
