DPD Technical Codes
Construction Codes Advisory Board

Overview

DPD relies heavily on the advice of professionals and citizens to develop workable construction codes. The Construction Codes Advisory Board (CCAB) advises DPD on proposed code amendments and Director’s Rules related to the technical codes by providing input based on the members’ professional experience and point of view. To learn more about CCAB's role, view the CCAB Overview PowerPoint.

CCAB is a 13-member voluntary board, appointed by the Mayor, confirmed by the City Council and given its authority by Seattle Building Code Section 105. It also serves as an advisory hearing body for appeals under Section 104.18 of the Seattle Building Code, Section 110 of the Seattle Mechanical Code and Section 208 of the Seattle Electrical Code.

Each board member serves a three-year term. Because the code requires that the terms be staggered, the City recruits new members every year to fill the positions being vacated. If you have an interest in CCAB and are willing to make a commitment to serve the City you may wish to attend a CCAB meeting. Meetings are scheduled for the first and third Thursday of every month, although scheduled meetings may be cancelled and extra meetings may be scheduled if necessitated by the board’s workload.

Positions

Each board position represents a specific profession or the general public. CCAB is comprised of the following positions:

  • 1 architect
  • 1 structural engineer
  • 1 electrical engineer
  • 1 general contractor
  • 1 electrical contractor
  • 1 organized labor
  • 3 general public
  • 1 heating, refrigeration and air-conditioning engineer
  • 1 commercial building owner or operator
  • 1 apartment building owner or operator
  • 1 developer or contractor of residential projects

In addition to these board positions, the Seattle Fire Department, City Light, and the Seattle-King County Department of Public Health are represented by ex officio, non-voting members of the board.

Appeals

For details on a code interpretation appeals, see Client Assistance Memo 332, Code Interpretation Appeals to the Construction Codes Advisory Board.
