Operations
The Technology Infrastructure Line of Business
builds and operates the City’s corporate communications and computing
assets. This enables
City government to better manage information, to deliver services to
constituents more efficiently and to make good decisions.
DoIT Technology Infrastructure consists of a number of
programs. Some of these
programs serve City government as a whole, while others serve only
specific departments:

Services

Provides a seamless data network connecting all of the
City's 8000+ computers and City departments together and connecting them
to the Internet. Also provides data networking internal to many
departments. |

| Enterprise Computing (RS6000
and Data Center)
|
| |
Provides a reliable, secure, 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week
production computing environment (data center) for the City's computer
servers and major applications such as CCSS, Hansen Permitting, HRIS, MCIS,
Passport and Summit. |

| Servers
(NetWare and Windows) |
| |
Provides, operates and maintains Microsoft Windows and
Novell NetWare servers for a variety of City-government-wide and
departmental applications. |

Desktop Services
|
| |
Supports approximately 2200 desktop computers in a
number of departments, specifically: DPD,
DoIT, Finance, the Executive, Fleets/Facilities,
Personnel, SDOT and the small departments.

|
| |
Provides technical assistance and support of information
technology for non-utility departments, and telephone service
and support for all departments. |

| Telephone System
Services
|
| |
Operates and maintains the City's private telephone network
(about 12,000 telephones) and related systems such as voicemail. |

| Communications
Shop & 800 MHz Radio Network
|
| |
Installs and maintains the Seattle portion of the Countywide
800 MHz public safety radio system - over 4000 handheld and mobile radios
plus transmission sites. Also supports a wide variety of other wireless
and wired communications technologies. |

| Telecommunications
Applications
(IVR, TMS) |
| |
Programs and provides interactive voice response (IVR),
telephone management system (TMS) and similar applications which support
the City's telecommunications (telephone and data networking) functions. |

| Messaging (Electronic
Mail) & Directory Services

| |
Provides, operates, and maintains an infrastructure for
e-mail, calendaring, directory, and related services for City government.
Most departments maintain their own internal electronic mail systems which
are linked to this City-government-wide infrastructure. This function does
support such internal systems for certain departments such as: DPD, DoIT,
Finance, Fleets/Facilities, Personnel, SDOT and the
small departments. |

Works with departments to ensure that applications are
acquired or developed and implemented consistent with the City’s
technology environment. |
