Proposed Changes to Telecommunications Regulations

August 23, 2001

Two ordinances pertaining to telecommunication facilities will soon be submitted by the Department of Design, Construction and Land Use (DCLU) to the Seattle City Council. The ordinances would both amend the Land Use Code (SMC Title 23); one ordinance would amend the shoreline portion of the code.

The proposed regulations include height limits, limits on location and placement of telecommunication facilities, review and approval processes based on type of devices and corresponding zones, and mitigation of visual impacts.

A Declaration of Non-significance (DNS), stating that no Environmental Impact Statement will be required, has been made on each ordinance. The declarations were issued on August 20, 2001. The appeal period ends September 20, 2001. Copies of the DNSes are available at the DCLU Public Resource Center, 700 5th Avenue, Suite 2000 of the Key Tower, (206) 684-8467. The Public Resource Center is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

UPDATE: This legislation has been approved by City Council and the Mayor and becomes effective
November 1, 2002. See related news story.
