Checking Your Home for Earthquake Damage

The following are general guidelines for signs of earthquake damage in residential buildings. Check your house carefully, paying attention to:
  • Brick chimneys (if there are cracks or loose bricks, stay away from area where chimney could fall)
  • Signs that house has moved off foundation
  • Major cracking
  • Exposed beams that appear to have slid off supports

If you feel your building is unsafe, vacate the premises and contact a structural engineer (listed in the yellow pages of the phone book) or call the Structural Engineers Association of Washington at (206) 682-6026 for a referral.
