Land Use Planning

DPD planners help shape the long-range vision for the physical development of the city.

Comprehensive Plan
DPD is responsible for maintaining Seattle’s Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive Plan articulates a vision for how Seattle will accommodate growth over the next 20 years, while promoting the values of its citizens, through its urban village strategy. Other planning efforts focus on areas of the city where opportunities exist to enhance livability, and support development that would advance Comprehensive Plan goals.

Neighborhoods
DPD planners help shape the long-range vision for the physical development of the city. DPD also develops and amends the zoning that governs uses and development standards (regulations such as height, density, landscaping and the like) in zones throughout the city.

Environment
DPD plays a central role in promoting green and sustainable building practices and protecting and enhancing the natural environment of the city.

Zoning
DPD is responsible for the rules that regulate land use and development in Seattle.  Zoning regulations determine whether land can be used for residential, commercial, or industrial purposes.

Seattle Planning Commission
Advises the Mayor, City Council and City departments on broad planning goals, policies and plans for Seattle's physical development.

Planning Archive
Access reports, documents, and background information for completed long-range planning projects.

Planning Exhibit
Urban Agriculture
The Urban Agriculture planning exhibit is on display in the Seattle Municipal Tower level 3 lobby.
