Seattle Justice Center Move

The Municipal Court of Seattle successfully opened its doors at the new Seattle Justice Center on Wednesday, November 13, 2002. After 2 years of planning and construction, the Seattle Justice Center is the Court's new home after over 50 years in the Public Safety Building.

As residents of the Public Safety building since 1951 the Court's growth in the 1980's led to its expansion of operations including moving Probation Services into the Dexter Horton Building in 1985, opening a courtroom in the King County Jail in 1986 and then 2 more courtrooms in the Dexter Horton Building in 1987. In the late 1990's the Public Safety Building was declared seismically deficient, overcrowded, and nearing the end of its useful life so in 1997, ordinance 118757 authorized the design of a new courthouse, the Seattle Justice Center.

It's also important to note that the Seattle Justice Center is more than just a home for the Municipal Court as it is also the headquarters for the Seattle Police Department.
