Web Filing Guidelines

Seattle Municipal Court accepts the filing of some documents through the Seattle Municipal Court Portal. By implementing this voluntary option, the court will reduce paperwork and improve efficiency.

Request Attorney or Clerk Access to Portal

  1. Proceed to the Seattle Municipal Court Portal and select Log in to the SMC Portal.
  2. Click on Need User Account? on the sign-in page.
  3. Enter your email address where prompted and select send.
  4. You will receive an email with a link to complete the sign-up process. If you do not receive an email, check your spam folder.
  5. After clicking the link, you will be prompted to create a password and create a user account.
  6. You will receive a confirmation screen that your user account has been successfully created.
  7. Log-in to the portal and select Profile from the left-hand menu.
  8. Fill out the required fields. Support staff (paralegals, investigators, etc.) will need to sign-up as an Agency Clerk.
  9. Once you have completed your profile, you will receive an email with instructions for completing the authorization process.

Filing Documents

In order to file documents through the portal, you must have an attorney or agency clerk log-in. Filings are accepted for cases with future court dates. Filings are only accepted in the courtroom for cases set on the day of filing.  

Filing Instructions

  1. Create document using word processing software and convert to PDF.
  2. Log-in to the portal and select Document Submittal from the left-hand menu.
  3. Enter case number and select Search.
  4. Select a file to upload.
  5. Select Document Name from the menu. If you file under the wrong document name, your filing will be rejected.
  6. Enter optional description.
  7. Select Upload to file the document.
  8. A notice verifying receipt of the filing is automatically emailed to the filing party.
  9. The court will accept or reject the document and notify the filing party within 72 hours.
  10. Filings submitted after business hours will be marked as received on the next business day.

Attorney Signatures - An electronic document which requires an attorney's signature may be signed with a digital signature or signed in the following manner:

Documents Accepted Via Portal

Not all court documents are accepted via the portal. The list of documents acceptable for filing electronically via the portal has been reviewed and agreed upon by the court. At this time, only documents that are to be filed prior to a hearing will be accepted through the portal. Of those, only documents which do not require a judicial signature or dissemination to other parties by the court will be accepted.
