Yellow Pages Phone Books
Seattle residents now have a reliable way to opt-out of yellow pages directories by visiting: www.seattle.gov/stopphonebooks/
Legislative History:
Over 1.5 million yellow pages phone books are delivered to residents and business in Seattle each year, generating over 2,000 tons of paper recycling. Reducing the number of unwanted phone books in our waste stream is one of the Council's Zero Waste Priorities for 2010-2011.
In 2010 and 2011, the City Council passed Ordinances 123427 and 123532, creating an opt-out system to help residents stop receiving unwanted phone books. During development of this legislation, Councilmember O'Brien and his colleagues heard from hundreds of residents through e-mail, phone calls, and public testimony, with overwhelming support to pass legislation regulating phone book delivery.
