FUTURE OF THE ALASKAN WAY VIADUCT
FOCUS OF HISTORIC MEETING
BETWEEN COUNTY COUNCIL AND SEATTLE CITY COUNCIL
County Council’s Committee of the Whole to host briefing
The regional transportation challenges that will emerge with future decisions on the Alaskan Way Viaduct will bring the Metropolitan King County Council and the Seattle City Council together for a historic meeting on Monday, April 7. The County Council’s Committee of the Whole will host the meeting, the first ever between the two Councils.
The meeting will be held in the County Council Chambers, 10th Floor, King County Courthouse. It will start at 9:30 a.m.
“This joint County Council-City Council meeting to discuss one of the most critical regional transportation issues is an historic first,” said Seattle City Councilmember Jan Drago, chair of the Council’s Transportation Committee. “I hope that this will be only the first of such collaborations on issues of concern to residents of Seattle and King County.”
“This historic joint meeting of the King County and Seattle City Councils demonstrates our commitment to seeking regional solutions to regional problems,” said Councilmember Dow Constantine, chair of the County Council’s Committee of the Whole. “We hope to hold future meetings with our elected colleagues from throughout the region to further this collaborative approach.”
The joint panel will receive briefings on the ongoing process involving the city, state and county to decide what will need to be done on Seattle’s Central Waterfront to mitigate the impact of the eventual viaduct closure. The briefings will be presented by the Washington State Department of Transportation, the King County Department of Transportation, and the Seattle Department of Transportation. They will focus on transit mitigation and the improvements that Interstate 5 and city surface streets will need to accommodate the increased traffic from the viaduct.
