Arai Jackson Ellison Murakami LLP is selected by the Seattle City Council to conduct feasibility study for Disaster Preparedness & Home Safety Center
Seattle, WA - In December 2007, the Seattle based firm Arai Jackson Ellison Murakami LLP (AJEM) was selected by the Seattle City Council to study the necessity and feasibility of a Disaster Preparedness & Home Safety Center that would serve the greater Puget Sound region and Washington State as a whole; as well as be the first of its kind in the United States. The initial idea for this project came from a May 2007 international study mission to Fukuoka, Japan sponsored by the Seattle Trade Development Alliance of Greater Seattle and the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce. During this trip, the members of the study mission, which included more than 70 government and business leaders from around the region, had the opportunity to visit the Fukuoka City Citizens’ Disaster Prevention Center. The Center includes facilities simulating earthquakes and violent wind conditions, and educational areas where visitors can practice fire-fighting and CPR techniques. This experience impressed upon the study mission members the potential benefit such a facility would have to the Puget Sound region and so they initiated the idea for a feasibility study. The study, which is scheduled to be complete by July 2008, will include a needs assessment, initial facility and education programming, alternative studies of costs and operational models, and an implementation plan. AJEM’s team includes Museum Management Consultants, Inc. (San Francisco) and Davis Langdon (Seattle). Leading this effort for the Seattle City Council are Councilmembers Jan Drago and Richard Conlin.
