COLLABORATION KEY TO CREATE ICONIC WATER GATEWAY TO CITY
Resolution calls for collaboration between the City and Washington State Ferries for redevelopment of Colman Dock
SEATTLE – The Council passed a resolution today calling for collaborative efforts between the Washington State Ferries and the City as plans move forward for the redevelopment of Colman Dock on Seattle’s Central Waterfront. The Washington State Legislature passed legislation earlier this year that directs the Washington State Ferries to work with the City and other stake holders as it plans to replace the ferry terminal facility at Colman Dock.
Peter Steinbrueck, lead sponsor of the Coleman Dock resolution, praised Washington State Ferries for their commitment to work collaboratively with the City in their long-term planning and design for replacement of the ferry terminal, the largest in the state of Washington. “I applaud Washington State Ferries’ support for an enhanced terminal that is responsive to Seattle's broader land use, transportation, economic and planning for the Central Waterfront,” Councilmember Steinbrueck said.
The resolution establishes guiding principles to:
- Protect panoramic views of Elliot Bay, Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains
- Provide public access to the edges and ends of the dock
- Provide programmable space for civic, cultural and historic activities
- Ensure that the redevelopment is scaled appropriately to the surrounding water front
- Create a distinct visual landmark that contributes the City skyline
- Focus on multimodal transportation including passenger-only ferries, bicycle storage, and access to bus and light rail service
- Ensure that the project will meet at least Silver LEED standards
“This is yet another example of the importance of collaboration between the City, the State and other stake holders to address transportation issues,” said Councilmember Jan Drago. “Now we have the basis to take advantage of opportunities to improve our waterfront.”
The redevelopment of Colman Dock is part of the Washington State Ferries Long Range Plan which includes a 16 Capital Improvement Plan. Planning and public process for the redevelopment of the dock will culminate with a presentation of a plan to the Washington State Legislature in the 2009 Session.
