DRAGO TOURS THIRD AVENUE IMPROVEMENTS
Councilmember and the Mayor highlight efforts to improve streetscape
SEATTLE — On Saturday November 17, 2007, Councilmember Jan Drago and Mayor Greg Nickels will tour the streetscape improvements being made on Third Avenue between Union and Stewart. The tour will highlight efforts to improve the Third Avenue streetscape with new awnings, removal of bus shelters, sidewalk cleaning, and plantings between Union and Stewart.
As Chair of the City Council’s Transportation Committee, Councilmember Drago is very excited to see these improvements starting to be made to the transit corridor. “When Metro King County and the City of Seattle agreed to keep Third Avenue as a transit corridor after re-opening of the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel, I knew we needed to make changes to the streetscape to accommodate and provide a safe environment for transit riders and pedestrians. We’ve also consulted closely with our private sector partners, the Downtown Seattle Association, to make these changes work for shoppers too.
“I am glad to see the Mayor is starting to take steps to improve the streetscape. The Council will take action on Monday, November 19, on the 2008 budget proposal to allocate an additional $500,000 to extend these improvements to six more blocks along Third Avenue and $150,000 to extend the study along the entire transit corridor from Jackson Street to Denny Way.
“Once these improvements are made, Third Avenue will be a great transit street and a safer street for all users,” said Councilmember Drago.
