DRAGO & SANISLO ELEMENTARY STUDENTS CELEBRATE “WALK TO SCHOOL MONTH” Council joins International Walk to School celebration
SEATTLE — On Friday, October 5th, Councilmember Jan Drago, Chair of the Transportation Committee and Co-Chair of the Council’s Special Committee on Pedestrian Safety, will join children at Sanislo Elementary School in West Seattle for an assembly to encourage the children to walk to school. Afterwards, Drago will join the children and their parents on a walk around the school. “The Council has made pedestrian safety a priority and this includes making sure we have safe facilities for school children”, says Councilmember Drago. “As a former teacher, I also know educating school children and their parents in safe walking techniques is important in promoting overall pedestrian safety.”
On Monday, October 1st, the Council declared October as “Walk to School Month,” joining communities world-wide in an International Walk to School celebration to encourage a more walkable world, one community at a time.
“I encourage elected officials and all Seattle residents to show their support for pedestrian safety and for Seattle’s children by walking to school or work or driving more attentively for the safety of those who do choose to walk,” said Councilmember Drago.
There are a number of schools in Seattle participating in Walk to School events, a few of which are being coordinated by Feet First, a pedestrian advocacy organization working to encourage children to walk to school through its Safe Routes to School Program.
