Council President withdraws proposal for legislative confirmation of police and fire chiefs

SEATTLE Yesterday, Thursday, June 21, Council President Nick Licata informed his colleagues that he has removed from consideration a charter amendment to have police and fire chiefs come before the Council every 4 years for reconfirmation.

Council President Licata said, This proposal should not be tied to any particular individual. It should be judged on whether there is merit in the Council renewing contracts for all of our Department Heads or just some of them.

Council President Licata added, Our attention at this time should be focused on getting all the facts out about the Office of Professional Accountability investigation of the Patterson case. The Council and the public need to hear the whole story without re-opening the case or subjecting the officers to double jeopardy. We must do this in an unbiased and transparent manner. Ultimately, the public must feel confident that the Office of Professional Accountability is an independent, civilian-run, oversight body.
