LICATA AND DELLA: IT’S TIME TO VOTE TO REBUILD THE VIADUCT
Councilmembers’ position affirmed by Gov. Chris Gregoire’s approach
SEATTLE — Council President Nick Licata and Councilmember David J. Della today welcomed the support of Gov. Chris Gregoire in their struggle to promote the only cost-effective, practical option to replace the hazardous Alaskan Way Viaduct by rebuilding the elevated highway. Council President Nick Licata said, “The Governor said today what we’ve been saying for years—the tunnel’s funding plan is not feasible and sufficient.” Councilmember Della said, “Back in September, we called for a vote of the people on the viaduct alternatives. We are pleased that the Governor has agreed that it is essential for Seattleites to have a chance to express their preference.”
The Councilmembers further agreed with the Governor that we have the money in hand to rebuild the dangerous viaduct. “It would be irresponsible to delay as we chase the gold-plated tunnel option. We can’t afford to let ‘tunnel vision’ drive out our middle and working class families,” said Councilmember Della.
Council President Licata was also pleased that the Governor called for a financial agreement showing the “binding financial commitments the City is willing to make.” Council President Licata said, “It is absolutely necessary to be clear who will pay for cost overruns on this mega-project. That’s why I proposed legislation to that effect back in September.”
