Belmont & Roy StreetBelmont & Roy Street

Respondent #35, October 5, 2013

The corner of Belmont Avenue and Roy Street in Capitol Hill is very dangerous. There are no crosswalks and it is not a four way stop. Both lanes of traffic typically go over the speed limit going up and down the Belmont hill. Yesterday 10/4/2013 a bicyclist was struck at this intersection while he tried to cross the street.

As I was taking these photos today 10/5/2013 I caught a near miss.

Over the years this area of Capitol Hill has changed a lot. The neighborhood is thriving with young families and Amazon employees (the closest route to the Amazon campus from Capitol Hill is Belmont Avenue East) and every day hundreds of pedestrians, commuters, and families try to navigate this corner.

For pedestrians there is no safe place to cross. In addition to not having crosswalks the traffic coming down the hill from Belmont has a blind curve to the right. You will see in the photos that there is no way for drivers to see what is coming next.

I would like to suggest 2 stop signs be placed here (to make an all-way stop) along with crosswalks. Not only would it provide a safer way to cross this intersection, it would slow down traffic.
