Taxicab and For-Hire Vehicle Licensing Process

The Consumer Affairs Unit performs taxicab and for-hire vehicle licensing for the City of Seattle. The primary licensing duty consists of the yearly renewal of every taxicab and for-hire vehicles license. Renewing of the license occurs May 16th through June 30th. 

Licensing of a taxicab requires many processes to be completed before the actual licensing of the taxicab or for-hire vehicle is performed at the Consumer Affair Unit, Test Station.

The required taxicab licensing documentation is:

Original Vehicle Registration. Obtained from the State of Washington, Department of Licensing.

Original Insurance Binder or Policy. May be emailed by insurance agent to vehicleinsurance@seattle.gov

Original For-Hire Certificate. May be emailed by State DOL to associationreports@seattle.gov

Original Certificate of Mechanical Safety. Obtained from an city approved ASE certified mechanic.

Original Taxicab License Application. Obtained at Consumer Affairs Unit or Fill out here and print version.

Original Security Camera Installation Form and Print. Obtained from an city approved camera installer.

Original Association Change Form. Obtained from affiliated taxicab association (only city or dual licensed vehicles).

Original LLC or INC Documentation. Obtained from State of Washington, Master License Department. (if applicable) NOTE: State LLC or INC paperwork not acceptable if application process is performed online. A manual state stamp is required on the state LLC oe INC documentation so a visit to Olympia Washington is required for State LLC or INC documentation being used for taxicab licensing. (if applicable) The State of Washingon, Master License Department may email appropriately office stamped LLC Amended Report, Profit Amended Report or LLC License Renewal & Annual Report to the Consumer Affairs Unit to associationreports@seattle.gov.

Criminal Record Check/Fingerprinting. Fingerprint cards and instructions obtained from the Consumer Affairs Unit. Criminal Record Check for License Application (only city & dual licensed vehicles)
