BE PREPARED FOR DISASTERS
These are things you can do to prepare before a disaster strikes:

  1. Secure all large objects and appliances (especially gas powered) to prevent moving and tipovers

  2. Place working fire extinguishers in all rooms with a potential for fires

  3. Move beds away from windows and objects that may fall in a quake

  4. Create a disaster plan that includes

A contact person well outside your local area (local phone lines may be down)

A safe meeting place for family members & pets (note: most shelters will not accept pets)

Periodic practice of "Drop, Cover & Hold" drills

  5. Create a disaster kit to be stored in a safe place that can be accessed from outside incase your home is unsafe to enter

AFTER THE SHAKING

  1. Check for injuries

  2. Check for gas leaks - shut off gas if there is any question about possible gas leaks

  3. Check for electrical malfunctions and fire hazards - shut off 'main' breaker if necessary

  4. Listen to Radio or TV for emergency instructions and information

  5. If building appears unsafe, evacuate and take disaster kits with you

  6. Check on your neighbors - especially children and the elderly

  7. Check brick walls, chimney and basement for cracks or damage to concrete or masonry

  8. Use telephones sparingly - lines may be down or overloaded

  9. Learn what abilities and facilities your neighbors have which may be of assistance
