Lewis Park

2005, neighbors and city agencies reclaim Lewis Park, clean up trash, exotics.

2006, work parties improve safety, remove large holly and laurel trees, block criminal trails.

2007, most Sundays, work parties, neighbors regularly clean up along Golf & Charles, restore the woods.

Forest goes south, crosses natural right-of-ways. Significant trees stand on private property.

 

2008 Achievements

Weekly work parties on Sundays start again in March.

2007 Achievements

Lewis Park's Forest Steward sums up 2007:

"We've planted 130 new trees and around 500 native shrubs and ground covers. There are more than 20 new native plant species that we've re-introduced to Lewis Park. Thank you for all of your devotion to our park, our community!"

  • A Small Sparks grant helped pay for some of the new plants, plus some tools.

  • Over 400 plants - shrubs, trees, ferns, and ground cover - were planted, tracts of mulch and compost spread, islands dug onto the bluff.

  • Nov. 10, 30 volunteers from Theta Delta Chi and 3 neighbors clear planting area on upper ridge, after participating at the OLA cleanup.

  • Nov. 9, neighbors plant ground cover at northern tip of park, at intersection of Golf and Charles.

  • Sept. 20, 21, 29 - Microsoft, SPU, and SU volunteers clear bluff and southern slope, plant.

  • Aug./Sept.: Three encampments excavated.

  • Aug. 25, 9 SeattleWorks and neighbors clear ivy from significant trees, cut laurels, hollies. A flatbed of branches, bags of trash, crates of glass, the exhaust pipe of a diesel semi, a rusted hunk of a Model A.

  • May - July, Forest Steward Vinh Nguyen begins weekly work parties, 50+ significant trees.

  • May 12, Treehouse volunteers clear the landscape along the northern tip of the park. BAN receives a $250 Small Sparks grant for planting native species and community outreach.

  • Jan. 15, 30 UW Filipino American Student Association and Cardinal Newman Association volunteers, plus neighbors, clear upper park across from PacMed driveways.

This spot on the upper, uphill, southern part of the park was made safer; native trees were planted spring/summer.
