Born and raised in Japan, Akio Takamori is considered one of the most inventive and expressive contemporary artists to emerge in ceramics today. Takamori says of the Sleeping Woman, "The need to sleep is the great equalizer of the human condition... . When sleep overtakes people, they gently disengage from the conscious world and slip away, albeit briefly, from unending social conditions. While in a state of sleep, the body rests -- a rejuvenating reprieve that mimics short hibernation."
