Seattle City Light 1% for Art funds and construction funds

The North Service Center's lobby floor, created by Claudia Fitch, features terrazzo and stained concrete set in a semi-circular pattern with both colors and design evocative of electrical wiring. The mainly geometric motif is punctuated intermittently with radiating quadrilaterals that contain stainless steel images referring to the work and services provided by the employees of Seattle City Light. Material for these metal vignettes came from historical and contemporary photos selected from City Light archives and taken in and around the Center itself. Integrating these images into the bold, graphic pattern of the terrazzo floor evokes a kinesthetic and narrative experience meant to engage the viewer in a dialog with the social, historical and architectural realities of the site.
