Chief Financial Officer
Position Overview: JOB SUMMARY
The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for the strategic and tactical management of the areas of accounting, budgeting and forecasting, audits, investments, cash management, payroll, and information systems through direct reports and associated staff for Seattle Symphony, its Foundation (endowment), and the BH Music Center. Will be a strategic confidante of the Executive Director. As a member of the senior management team, the incumbent is expected to provide strategic direction for those areas of responsibility and contribute to the overall decision-making of the senior management team. The Chief Financial Officer will report to the Executive Director and will have significant interaction with the Board of Directors, philanthropic donors, volunteers and external constituencies.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Accounting: Through the Controller, is responsible for general ledger accounting, endowment accounting, investment and pension accounting, revenue accounting, accounts payables and payroll. Ensures appropriate internal controls are in place under GAAP standards and ensures the effectiveness of accounting systems
- Budgeting and Forecasting Is responsible for developing the annual operating and capital budgets, cash flow analysis, and secures approval from the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors. Manages the on-going annual budgeting and long range forecasting process to ensure accuracy of information. Manages the relationship with the Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee. Manages all banking relationships and negotiation of credit facilities.
- Audits Works closely with outside auditors and the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors to ensure the Symphony receives a clean audit report. Manages the relationship with the Audit Partner-in-Charge and the Chair of the Audit Committee.
- Investments Is responsible for decisions on short term cash investments and works with the Investment Advisory Committee of the Foundation?s Board of Directors to establish appropriate investment strategies including asset allocations. Periodically reviews the performance of fund management and recommends course of action in maintaining or changing fund manager relationships. Manages relationship with Symphony Foundation Board.
- Pension Funds: Works closely with the Pension Advisory Board, the Human Resources Director, outside actuarial firms and Board Committees to communicate funding and FASB 87 requirements. Examines alternative methodology as appropriate in the areas of defined benefit and defined contribution plans.
- BH Facilities Management Insure effective oversight/management of BHMC, including all revenue, building management, and operations. BHMC Facilities Manager and the Facilities Sales & Service Manager are direct reports.
- Compliance Oversees compliance with all legal and reporting requirements, such as IRS, and reports to the League of American Orchestras, ASCAP, BMI, etc.
- Information Systems Through the Database Administrator, and working with the development and marketing divisions, oversees all computer and information system activities and issues of the organization, including systems-related policies, procedures and guidelines. Responsible for directing the strategic planning for IT in support of the organization?s vision, goals and objectives.
Qualifications:
- The successful candidate must possess a four year college degree and will be a CPA and\or hold a Masters Degree in Business Administration. Must have at least five years finance experience and proven track record of successfully managing a staff in excess of ten, and have been responsible for managing information systems departments.
- Personal qualities will include a highly developed interpersonal style that operates well and feels comfortable in a collaborative environment. A demonstrated ability to work in a diverse environment and community is essential. Strong verbal and written skills and the ability to work independently within a multi-disciplinary team are critical to success. Solid non-profit experience is required.
