Davis, Muñoz-Howard join Seattle Arts Commission

SEATTLE — The Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs announces two new members of the Seattle Arts Commission. Mayor Greg Nickels appointed Estevan Muñoz-Howard, and the Seattle City Council appointed Lara Davis. Both began their terms earlier this month.

Nickels appointed Muñoz-Howard to a one-year term as a YMCA "Get Engaged" commissioner. "Get Engaged" is a program that connects young adults with city boards and commissions. Muñoz-Howard is executive director of the Youth Media Institute, where he leads media training programs for high-school students. Founded in 2004, Youth Media Institute is a nonprofit organization that empowers youth through educational programs in media technologies.

Davis will complete the second half of Laura "Piece" Kelley’s two-year term on the commission. Davis is the community partnerships director and program team lead for Arts Corps. A nonprofit founded in 2000, Arts Corps fosters creativity in youth through arts education.

The Youth Media Institute and Arts Corps are housed at the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in West Seattle.

The Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs promotes the value of arts and culture in communities throughout Seattle. The Seattle Arts Commission, a volunteer citizen-advisory body, supports the city agency.

The mayor appoints seven of the commissioners; the City Council appoints seven, and a 15th member is selected by those 14. An additional commissioner is selected through the YMCA’s "Get Engaged" program.
