Nominations open for 2009 Mayor's Arts Awards
Know an individual or an organization making a difference in Seattle's communities through the arts? Nominate them for a 2009 Mayor's Arts Award. The Seattle Arts Commission will review nominations and recommend recipients to the mayor. The mayor will present the awards at the seventh annual 2009 Mayor's Arts Awards on the eve of the Labor Day weekend Bumbershoot festival at Seattle Center, noon, Friday, Sept. 4. He will also open the Bumbershoot Visual Arts Exhibits, which will be free and open to the public that day.

"Now more than ever we must show the value of arts and culture in Seattle. The arts are good for the community, good for the economy, and good for the soul," said Mayor Greg Nickels. "The Mayor's Arts Awards reflect an amazing diversity of artistic achievement."

The nomination deadline is Wednesday, April 8. Nominations must be received by 5 p.m. or postmarked by the deadline. The nomination form is available here. If you are unable to download the form, contact Tamara Childress, (206) 733-9591.

Youth Arts funding open
The Office is accepting applications for the Youth Arts program, an annual funding opportunity that supports arts training for Seattle's middle and high school youth outside of school hours. The program provides funding in all artistic disciplines. Funding awards range from $1,500 to $10,000. Projects must take place between September 2009 and September 2010. Application deadline is Tuesday, April 14.

Individual artists, arts/cultural organizations or groups and youth-service agencies with nonprofit status or fiscal sponsorship are eligible to apply. Priority is placed on serving youth or communities with limited access to arts and culture.

Artist sought to design on-street bike parking
The Office in partnership with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) seeks an artist or artist team to design on-street bicycle parking. Artist-designed bicycle parking is a product of the SDOT Art Plan. Bike racks will fill one or two motor vehicle parking spaces on the street. Each car-sized space will accommodate up to eight bikes.

The selected artist will work with SDOT staff to design, fabricate and install bicycle parking at two to four on-street locations. The new program addresses the expanding need for bicycle parking and is part of the city's Bicycle Master Plan, which aims to triple the number of people bicycling in Seattle over 10 years.

The call is open to established professional artists living in Washington state. The project budget is $30,000 for design, fabrication and installation. The application deadline is Monday, April 13. A link to the online application is available here.

Artist selected for Fremont Bridge residency
Seattle artist Kristen Ramirez will serve as artist-in-residence at the Fremont Bridge this summer. Ramirez will work in one of the bridge towers and use the space to undertake an exploration of the bridge. She will develop a temporary public art project in response to her experience on the bridge. The project will be completed by the end of the year.

Ramirez has a master's of fine arts in printmaking from the University of Washington. Her artworks are in the UW Book Arts Collection, 4Culture Public Art Collection, Seattle 1% for Art Collection and the Whatcom Museum of History and Art. She teaches at Cornish College for the Arts and Pratt Fine Arts Center. She has exhibited her murals and prints, both formally and informally, on the streets of Seattle.

A panel of artists, curators and community members selected Ramirez on the strength of her work and her ability to use historical research and community interaction to encourage awareness of the unique places in the city.
Artwork commissioned for utility's portable works collection

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has commissioned seven emerging artists to each create artworks for the SPU Portable Works Collection. The artworks will include paintings, sculpture, prints, vinyl application and beadwork.

A panel of arts professionals reviewed artworks from 98 artists and selected 10 finalists to create proposals in response to a specific SPU location. The seven selected artists are: Diana Falchuck, Gregory Glynn, Julia Haack, Chris Papa, Chauney Peck, Scott Schuldt and Laura Ward. Their artworks will be on view at seven locations in SPU offices in the Seattle Municipal Tower.

The SPU Portable Works Collection is exhibited throughout SPU's offices, engaging both employees and the public and creating an interesting and diverse work environment. SPU 1% for Art funds will support the commissions.
City Hall Gallery reception to honor Youngstown artists, programs

Mingle with the resident artists and organizations of Youngstown Cultural Arts Center at a reception for their group exhibition, Creative Convergence, 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, March 5 at City Hall, 600 Fourth Ave.

Youngstown Cultural Arts Center is home to 36 resident artists and their studios and several nonprofit organizations and community programs. Creative Convergence honors Black History Month (in February) and highlights the ways in which Youngstown embraces, encourages and empowers underserved communities.

The exhibition features photographs from the nonprofit programs housed at Youngstown. The show also features paintings, drawings and mixed-media artworks created by program participants and resident artists. The exhibition will be on display in the Lobby Gallery and Anne Focke Gallery at City Hall through March 20.

Housed in the historic Frank B. Cooper School, Youngstown is a program of the Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association, a private nonprofit organization based in West Seattle.

Seattle Parks seeks art for downtown parks
Parks-Specific—a new program to activate downtown parks—seeks up to three curators or curatorial teams to program art at three downtown Seattle parks.

The curator or team will create and present a five-month series of free arts events from June 1 to Oct. 31 in Victor Steinbrueck Park, Westlake Park and Occidental Park. All arts disciplines are welcome. The production budget is $10,000 per park for artist fees and project expenses.

Application deadline is Friday, March 6. Applicants must have demonstrated curatorial or event production experience. For application guidelines, visit our Web site. Seattle Parks and Recreation is managing the selection process.

Blues, musical theater on City Hall concert bill
From blues to musical theater, enjoy free concerts in March at City Hall. The performances are part of Seattle Presents, a lunchtime concert series presented by the Office at City Hall, 600 Fourth Ave. Shows are from noon to 1 p.m.

On March 5, enjoy Seattle blues legend Alice Stuart, who blazed the trail for women rockers. Stuart was one of the first females in the United States to write her own music, front a male band, play lead guitar and tour internationally.

On March 19, witness a treat for the ears and eyes. Instrument creator and physical musician Ela Lamblin will play his "stamenphone" (a person-sized, steel, flower-shaped instrument) with violinist, composer and actor Eric Chappelle. On March 26, toast the genius of Stephen Sondheim with a sampling of classics and selections from The 5th Avenue Theatre's upcoming musical Sunday in the Park with George.

New music on city phone lines
If you call the Seattle Aquarium to find out about Family First Sunday and are placed on hold, don't fret. You could hear a catchy ode to the aquarium by kids' rock band Recess Monkey. It's part of the latest Seattle OnHold music mix showcasing local musicians on city phone lines.

The new mix also features R&B soul singer Choklate, alt-country siren Kristen Ward, contemporary Balkan group Balkanarama, classical clarinetist Sean Osborn and more.

And you don't have to dial a city office to hear the music. Get the free podcast!
Seattle OnHold music submission deadline extended

The Office is seeking a broad selection of music recordings by local artists for Seattle OnHold. This innovative program treats callers to local music when they call the city and are placed on hold.

More than 10,000 city phone lines feature the music. Seattle OnHold also offers a free local music podcast. Listeners can buy music via iTunes, CD Baby and Amazon.com and link to featured musicians' Web sites and concert calendars on the OnHold Web site.

Submit an application by Friday, March 13 to be considered in the next OnHold review cycle.

MOHAI to host A-Y-P Souvenir and Stories Day
Here's an interesting tidbit as we gear up for the centennial celebration of the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific (A-Y-P) Exposition. The March 14, 1909 headlines in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer read: "P-I is first to open bureau at fair grounds," "Cleaner Seattle is city's aim for Exposition year," and "Lincoln's Carriage to be exhibited at Exposition."

The news for March 14, 2009 is: Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) holds Souvenirs and Stories: A Salute to 1909. Join collectors and share A-Y-P memorabilia and stories, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, March 14.

Attend a workshop on collection care, a 1909-era fashion show, and enjoy music and refreshments. Collectors can win awards and have a chance to tell their story to radio station KBCS.FM. The event is free with museum admission. For more information, visit MOHAI's Web site.

Opening on March 7 at MOHAI is Photographing the Fair: The A-Y-P Photos of Frank H. Nowell and Others. Step back in time and see the grandeur and pageantry, as well as the aspects peculiar to 1909 in this engaging photography exhibition.

Creative vitality, a boost to the economy
In tough economic times, the Office will continue to lead the way in advocating for the arts as an essential element in the vitality of our city. A strong arts and culture sector and a creative workforce will help revitalize our economy.

We continued our partnership with the Washington State Arts Commission and the Western States Arts Federation to track the Creative Vitality Index (CVI)—a tool that measures the health of the creative economy in the city and state by charting arts participation and arts-related employment.

2007 data ranked Seattle's overall creative vitality at 5.68 times the national average, up from 5.30 in 2005. Seattle's percentage of creative occupations—including writers, architects, actors and animators—is seven times the national average. Revenues for nonprofit arts organizations are more than eight times the national average. In the four years of tracking data for the index, the 2007 figures represented a high point. While the economic downturn is likely to result in a dip in arts-related employment and possibly participation, this robust tool allows us to monitor trends in Seattle's creative sector and inform arts policy.
Panel to address livability, sustainability and economy

What lies ahead for Seattle against the backdrop of our weakened economy? Will artists and environmentalists face threat or a chance to advance in this new and uncharted territory?

Explore diverse concepts of livability and sustainability and how we can use the present moment to prepare for a positive future at the CityClub presentation Tough Times in the Livable City. The buffet luncheon and program will be held 12:15 to 1:30 p.m., Friday, March 13, at Rainier Square, Third Floor Atrium, 1333 Fifth Ave.

Panelists are Justin Carder, president, Capitol Hill Community Council; Michael McGinn, executive director, Seattle Great City Initiative; Tony To, executive director, HomeSight of Washington; and moderator Knute Berger, Crosscut columnist.

Take Part in Art and save big, one-day sale Feb. 25

The Puget Sound region's new Take Part in Art Festival is underway and you can sample a variety of events without breaking the bank. The festival—which began Feb. 20—runs through March 1 and features discounted events in an effort to entice people to try something new and save some coin.

More than 60 arts organizations are participating and the deals include two-for-one tickets, "pay-what-you-will" performances and $20 ticket offers. Be sure to take advantage of the one-day sale on Wednesday, Feb. 25, when many arts groups will offer discounted tickets to events happening outside of the festival week.

Seattle Channel's Art Zone features local music, art
Get your art groove on with Art Zone with Nancy Guppy every Thursday at 8 p.m. on Seattle Channel 21. Here's what's coming up.

On February 26, see country/rockabilly musician Vince Mira, sculpture by Akio Takamori, and Robert Horton's chat with comedienne Julia Sweeney. On March 5, enjoy the jazz of the Jason Parker Quartet, a profile of theatrical performance group UMO, and KEXP's Sharlese Metcalf's update from the local music scene.

Marcie Sillman tours Seattle's portable art collection on March 12. Also meet photographer Thuy Van and listen to the rockin' Bollywood sounds of Manhoogi Hi.
