Community Stresses Arts in District's Meetings on Strategic Plan
Seattle Arts Commission Education Committee members attended all of the May community meetings convened by Seattle Public Schools to review the district's new Strategic Plan document. The Committee led the effort to draft arts goals for the previous Five-Year Plan, and set a goal to ensure that the new plan will continue to recognize the importance of access to arts for all students.

As seen in the district's summary of the community input, the arts were among seven areas of concern that were raised consistently in all community meetings. These values, including arts, were acknowledged in the final draft of the plan.

The School Board formally adopted the new plan, "Excellence for All," at its meeting on June 4.

RotaryMusic4Life First Annual Benefit a Success
The Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs is helping launch a new initiative to open up music education opportunities for more students in Seattle Public Schools. RotaryMusic4Life raised almost $26,000 for music instruction at a benefit auction held on June 9. Maestro Gerard Schwartz of Seattle Symphony and SPS Superintendent Dr. Maria Goodloe-Johnson spoke warmly for the cause. Thanks to many of Seattle's music and arts organizations that donated auction items.

A partnership of SPS, the Rotary Clubs of Seattle and Northwest Youth Music Association. RotaryMusic4Life is looking for donated instruments, supplies and contributions to insure that all children have the choice to study music. Check it out!
