Approved Compostable Bags
Plain, uncoated (no shine) paper bags and compostable bags are good ways to contain and carry food scraps to your food and yard waste cart.
Compostable bags are made from plant-based materials that break down when composted. These bags are green or very pale green. They aren't plastic or black in color.
Don't put plastic and “biodegradable” bags in your food and yard waste bin:
- Plastic bags don't break down and will ruin the compost.
- Bags labeled “biodegradable” usually break down into small pieces, but aren't compostable.
Only the following bag brands are acceptable to put in your food and yard waste bin. These logos also identify compostable bags accepted in Seattle's food and yard waste bins.
Buy these bags at most retail stores (pdf) or online.
Most compostable bags won't break down into compost in backyard compost or in your collection bins.
For multifamily and community living facilities
We recommended the following replacement bag sizes for indoor bins:
For outdoor bins, your collection person will re-line the bins each week with service. You don't need replacement bags for outdoor bins.
