South Park Water Quality Facility

Duwamish_Kayakers

This project will improve water quality in the northern part of South Park.

What & Why

Seattle Public Utilities is working on 3 stormwater projects in the northwestern part of South Park. These projects will reduce flooding and improve water quality in the Lower Duwamish Waterway.

This project will create a water quality facility that will treat stormwater from the storm drain system before it flows into the Duwamish Waterway.

Before we can operate the new water quality facility, we must construct a pump station that will ultimately pump flows into the water quality facility.

What's happening now?

SPU is evaluating stormwater treatment technologies for the facility, currently planned to be located at 640 and 636 S Riverside Dr. Field testing of treatment technologies was completed in Q1 and Q2 2017. Next steps for the project include:

  • Technology selection and preliminary site layout is scheduled to continue through 2017 and 2018.
  • The design and construction schedule will be finalized once a technology is selected.

Project goals and benefits

When complete, this project will clean stormwater before it flows into the Duwamish Waterway. Combined with the pump station, this project will allow the system to accommodate the expansion of the drainage improvements being planned in South Park.

This project is part of the Plan to Protect Seattle Waterways.
