South Park Pump Station

PumpStation

Current design of the flood control pump station.

What & Why

Seattle Public Utilities is working on 3 stormwater projects in the northwestern part of South Park. These projects will reduce flooding and improve water quality in the Lower Duwamish Waterway.

This project will create a pump station. The pump station will pump stormwater to the Duwamish Waterway during high tide events, when the storm drain system cannot properly drain to the Waterway. The pump station will reduce flooding on roads that already have a stormwater collection system (including catch basins and inlets).

This project is supported in part with funding from the King County Flood Control District.

What’s happening now?

Due to complications with the 7th Ave S street vacation SPU is currently assessing siting opportunities for the pump station and water quality facility. Sizing of the water quality facility in late 2017 and early 2018 will help determine the optimal use for SPU’s property adjacent to the 7th Ave S street end and help finalize the pump station design. SPU is still committed to working with the community on the 12th Ave S and S Elmgrove St site that is associated with the street vacation petition.

Project goals and benefits

When complete, this project will reduce flooding in the industrial and residential area in the northern part of South Park.

The pump station will pump stormwater to the Lower Duwamish Waterway to prevent water from backing up in the pipes during high tides and causing flooding. In conjunction with the water quality facility, the pump station will enable the current system to accommodate drainage improvements being planned in South Park.
