Natural Drainage Systems Partnering

Natural drainage systems (NDS) are constructed depressions along the road in the right-of-way or “planter strip”. They are a type of green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) and are built to:

  • Slow the flow of stormwater
  • Filter pollutants
  • Allow the stormwater to slowly seep into the ground

SPU’s Integrated Plan requires NDS within three creek basins in Seattle: Piper’s, Thornton, and Longfellow. Within these basins, SPU is identifying potential NDS locations by working with city departments on their priority improvements (example: street or pedestrian improvements), looking for opportunities to address a localized flooding problem, and/or working with residents on technically feasible streets.
