South Transfer Station
New South Transfer Station Open and Operational
The new state-of-the-art South Transfer Station is now open to all customers and replaces the former South Recycling and Disposal Station located down the street. The hi-tech, ultra-environmental (LEED Gold) station will serve customers for at least the next 50 years. The total project cost will be $76 million. This includes costs of property acquisition, site cleanup, environmental studies and master plan, along with $55 million for the engineering design, permitting, equipment, material testing, construction, construction management and improvements to the land.

The new facility is located at 130 South Kenyon Street, Seattle, WA 98108. Features of the new facility include:
- Larger area to accept different types of waste materials.
- Reduced dust and odor due to a misting system that removes dust from the air and can be used to reduce odors.
- A rainwater collection system that stores water in a cistern to be used for washing and irrigation of landscaping.
- Automated weigh-and-pay station for increased efficiency.
- Shorter lines, a reduction in wait times, and enough space to prevent back-ups onto public streets.
- Increased safety inside the station for customers and employees.
- A separate entrance for garbage trucks for added safety and efficiency.
- Waste compactors to optimize loads for efficient transport.
- High-quality architecture that meets the gold standard in environmental design.
- Public art that features salvaged street signs and parts from the old South Park bridge. Other art at the facility includes works made from recycling plastic forks and niches for transfer station staff to display “interesting items” that are found in the trash.
- A viewing room for tour groups and individuals to safely see the activity on the receiving floor.
