Project overview

In fall 2017, crews completed construction on the north side of S Orcas St between 25th Ave S and 32nd Ave S to make it easier for kids to walk and bike to Dearborn Park Elementary.

This project is part of Seattle's Vision Zero to end traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030 through design, education, and enforcement.

This project included new sidewalk, curb ramps, and planting strips along north side of S Orcas St from 25th Ave S to 32nd Ave S. The project included:

  • Adding new sidewalk on the north side of S Orcas St between the Chief Sealth Trail and 32nd
  • Replacing some areas of existing sidewalk on the north side of S Orcas St from 25th Ave S to the Chief Sealth Trail
  • Adding new curb ramps where required at pedestrian crossing locations
  • Adding new curb, gutter, and trees within the planting strip
  • Maintaining on-street parking along much of the north side of S Orcas St
  • Providing walking and biking safety education for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders

Schedule

Construction on S Orcas St began in April 2017 and was completed in fall 2017.

Funding

Levy to Move SeattleThe Safe Routes to School Program is funding project design as well as the education and encouragement programs. Project construction is funded by the 9-year Levy to Move Seattle, approved by voters in 2015.
