South Albro Place over Airport Way South Bridge Seismic Project
Project Description This project consists of the construction of seismic retrofits to address seismic deficiencies of the South Albro Place Bridge structure. Retrofit measures include column jackets, new steel struts, restrainers, seat extensions, full and partial depth reinforced grade beams, and a steel portal frame and column ring retrofit. Construction Schedule The project was advertised for competitive bids in August 2009 and work on the Bridge started on January 1 st, 2010. SDOT selected CA Carey Corporation to complete the seismic retrofits . The seismic work will only require occasional lane closures and shifting of traffic lanes throughout the project in order to accommodate work within the roadway. Most of the construction has no major impacts to the traffic or functional use of the structure. Construction is expected to wrap up by mid November 2010.
What you can expect during construction Work hours The construction crews will work from 7 am to 5 pm, 5 days a week. Some weekend night work (after 9 pm until 7 am) may be done periodically in order to complete the project within the designated construction period. This weekend night work is to accommodate railroad traffic safety requirements. Noise Nearby neighbors can expect more persistent noise due to construction activities during daytime hours. Types of construction noise include backup alarms, truck traffic, and heavy machinery including cranes, loaders, haulers, and chipping hammers. The noise level is not expected to be above the noise level typically experienced within an industrial area or adjacent to the railroad. Traffic Impacts The bridge will remain open to all traffic, bicycles, and pedestrians. Neighbors can expect a slight increase in traffic along Airport Way S, when lanes are reduced or shifted. Environmental Considerations SDOT conducted an environmental assessment of the work and determined that the work files under the category of maintenance work. It was determined that the project was unlikely to have significant adverse impacts to the environment. Public Outreach During construction we plan to continue to provide information about the project to the public and keep neighbors engaged through regular e-mail updates. The South Albro Place Bridge is located in south Seattle's Georgetown neighborhood. Bounded on the east by 1-5 and Corgiat Dr S. and on the west by Stanley Ave, the S. South Albro Place Bridge spans the BNSF Railway, the Union Pacific Railroad tracks and Airport Way South. It is The King County Airport is located just to the south of the project site.
