SPD and TECHNOLOGY Improvements in communication and information technology are making it more possible than ever to provide officers with timely and complete information whenever and wherever they need it. In doing so, both officer and public safety are enhanced. The Department’s patrol vehicles are equipped with mobile data computers as well as video camera technology. Soon these vehicles will be linked to an upgraded records management system and a new computer aided dispatch system. These will speed up-to-the-minute information to officers on suspects, incidents, locations and hazards. They will also enhance the timeliness of response to events. Technology is also helpful in extending the Department’s capability when officers are not available. For example, the use of red light cameras observe those endangering themselves and other by running red lights even when officers are not there to catch them. A pilot project being launched this year by the Parks Department with assistance from SPD will place cameras in city parks to enhance safety in those public spaces and ensure they remain inviting to city residents.
