PROJECT STATUSOctober 2007The City of Seattle has signed an agreement to expand the size of Hing Hay Park by purchasing the adjoining parcel. Currently at .33-acre, the additional property will increase the park to .64 acres. The property is currently leased by the United States Postal Service's International District Station. The Post Office will stay at its current location under the terms of its lease while it conducts its own public process to relocate within the neighborhood. The City's acquisition is expected to closed by the end of the year. A public meeting was held on March 29, 2007. Parks acquisition staff recommended that the size of Hing Hay Park be increased by purchasing the adjoining parcel, currently leased to the Post Office. Those in attendance at the meeting supported the purchase of the property, provided the Post Office remain in the neighborhood and existing safety issues are addressed. In September 2005, the Seattle City Council unanimously approved projects to be funded through the second cycle of the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund, including approximately $200,000 to develop a new or expanded park in the International District/Pioneer Square Urban Center Village area. Planning for this development project will begin after Seattle Parks has purchased property for the expanded park. Acquisition funding was provided in the first cycle of the Opportunity Fund.
PROJECT DESCRIPTIONIn the second cycle of the Opportunity Fund, funding was provided to supplement acquisition, if needed, and to develop the site that is acquired. (
