Thank you, Seattle. This Pro Parks Levy acquisition project is complete.

In November 2002, a celebration was held at the site of the future Homer Harris Park at 24th Avenue and East Howell Street. This event celebrated the anonymous donation of $1.3 million toward acquisition and development of this park. It also celebrated the accomplishments of Dr. Homer Harris, one of Seattle's most beloved and respected athletes and physicians, for whom the park is named.

In December 2002 Parks and Recreation completed acquisition of the property that became Homer Harris Park.

The grand opening ceremony for Homer Harris Park was held May 14, 2005.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Pro Parks Levy included funds to acquire property for a park in Seattle's Central Area. An anonymous donor provided a gift of $1.3 million through the Seattle Parks Foundation toward acquisition and development of the park site. This enabled a larger park than originally envisioned as well as enhanced park improvements.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

In the 1990s, the community's Central Area neighborhood plan identified the need for a park in the area near Madison and 23rd Avenue.

Subsequently, the 2000 Pro Parks Levy included funding for acquisition and development of a small park in the neighborhood. Working with the community, Parks and Recreation staff identified a potential site for acquisition and a future park.

In 2002, an anonymous gift of $1.3 million was made through the Seattle Parks Foundation toward this new park, doubling the size of the park, increasing park development funding for the site, and creating a small maintenance endowment.

This represents one of the largest donations in the history of Seattle Parks and Recreation. For more information, see Seattle Parks Foundation
