ABOUT THE PARK

Ballard Playfield, adjacent to Ballard Community Center and Adams Elementary School, is a multi-purpose playfield featuring a children's play area and a soccer/baseball/softball field.

HISTORY

Ballard Playfield is named after the district (once the town) of Ballard, named in honor of Capt. William R. Ballard, who platted the town in 1882. It was incorporated in 1889, named in 1890, and annexed to Seattle in 1907.

In 1889 Capt. Ballard built a small mill for shingles that became the Seattle Cedar and Lumber Manufacturing Co. Nearby Salmon Bay is the center of Seattle's fishing industry, and Ballard fishers provide the world with herring, salmon and halibut. Beside lumber and fishing, Ballard's economy was based on shipbuilding.
